The three main mechanisms of how L-theanine works in the brain:

  1. Dampens the effects of excitatory brain chemicals
    1. L-theanine is reported to target a number of glutamate receptors, including N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl- 4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) and kainite receptors, although at a much lower affinity compared to glutamate
  2. Increases levels of calming and mood-elevating brain chemicals
    1. L-theanine also stimulates the production of the calming brain chemicals like γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), serotonin and dopamine adding to its calming and relaxing effects without sleepiness or impaired motor function
  3. Increases alpha brain waves
